Police search on for man who shot two teenagers by Brian Griffin

Hanover Park Police arrested three men Tuesday on burglary charges in connection with a three-part Memorial Day incident that occurred in central Hanover Park. The search is still on, however, for the gunman who shot 14 rounds from a 9mm handgun and wounded two 18 year olds as they sat in their parked vehicle.

“We’re uncertain what the connection is to the shooting at this point, if any,” Kenneth Felbinger, Support Services manger for the Hanover Park Police Department, said of the three suspects arrested Tuesday and their relationship to the shooting. On Tuesday police charged Clifford D. Vaughn, 40 6834 Valley View, Hanover Park: Joseph C. Outlaw, 35, Downers Grove; And Kenneth Grayer, 43 Bristol Lane, Hanover Park, with breaking into a 6822 Valley view home apparently in retaliation for an argument that occurred earlier at approximately 9:10 p.m. on that May 30 evening.

Police say that that earlier incident—a fight among a group of juveniles apparently over a baseball card collection sent one youth to the hospital for examination of a shoulder injury after being struck with either a baseball bat or a golf club—spurred on the three men arrested on Tuesday to break into the Valley View townhouse.

Police say that after the men broke a window near the front door to gain entrance, they entered the home, shouting and threatening one of the youths involved in a the argument. According to police, that youth managed to hide safely inside the house. Almost tow hours after the first incident and about 55 minutes after the second incident, police responded to a third call at the Valley View address. This time the call was preceded with gunfire and two teenagers suffered from bullet wounds. Michael P. Byas, 18 Hanover Park and Debra K. Spencer, 18, Schaumburg, were both listed in serious but stable condition on Tuesday.

Police say that Byas suffered multiple gun shot wounds, one to the arm and another to the chest, while Spencer was shot once in the stomach. Police say that the gunman approached their vehicle and opened fire. The motive behind the shots fired apparently stems from an earlier dispute involving two families that lived on the block where the incident took place, said police. According to police, however, the victims were not involved in the prior incidents. Police describe the gunman as a 18 to 20-year-old black male, approximately 5’8” and weighing about 140 pounds. At the time of the shooting, he was wearing a baseball cap and a dark Starter brand jacket, said police.
